Recent reading – July 2008

I thought I would share some of the books that I have read recently. I was very busy until the end of July with graduate classes, but as soon as they were finished, I found time to read for fun again. Ā Please let me know if you have read any of these books, what you thought of them, or if you plan to read them in the future. Ā I do recommend all of them. Ā ~Melissa

A Dog About Town, J. F. Englert

Light on Snow, Anita Shreve

The Ladies’ No. 1 Detective Agency, Alexander McCall Smith

The Last Lecture, Randy Pausch with Jeffrey Zaslow

Elements of Style, William Strunk Jr. and E. B. White

Cards on the Table, Agatha Christie

  1. Hi Missy and all my fellow readers,

I am really enjoying your blog and just wanted to share my last good read:

It was I HEARD THAT SONG BEFORE by Mary Higgins Clark. I have never read anything by her before and I am so happy I did. I am ashamed to say that for years I have only been interested in select genres and I did not really branch out to anything else. My reading primarily consisted of African-American fiction and included some Anne Rule here and there.

The change mainly came when you first mentioned the book, DOG ABOUT TOWN. That book really sparked my interested I began reading it but did not finish so I need to restart that ļŠ. Ok so back to Mary Higgins Clark. I was in the airport coming back from Houston and I needed to read. Because I have a strong interest in suspense and I had not read anything of that nature in a while I went to that section.

Of course, there were a number of books by MHC and I read the synopsis of all of them but I HEARD THAT SONG BEFORE really grabbed my attention it had a little love, a little murderā€¦ you know all that good stuff that goes great with a cozy chair and a cup of tea. I wonā€™t give anything away but I did want to say that it was definitely a page turner.

Thank you for sharing your blog with us I will definitely go to the library and check out THE LAST LECTURE.

  2. Our local book club read The Ladies’ Number 1 Detective Agency, and everyone fell in love with Precious. At least, I think that’s her name. She was such a capable, endearing, and “real” character that we couldn’t help but care about her. What a jerk her husband was!

The Elements of Style is amazingly rich in content to be such a slim little volume, isn’t it? I keep a copy at work and at home to keep me straight when I’m wondering about lay and lie, when to spell numbers as opposed to just writing them as numbers, etc.
