☕ Country Cafe (Hamlin, PA)

Exploring the area while in Hamlin, PA, I stumbled upon the Country Cafe. Though more of what I think we, in New Jersey, would call a “diner,” the Country Cafe is a really great spot for breakfast or lunch…or a cozy, bottomless cup of coffee.

I’ve been there on a few different occasions (mostly for brunches with friends and once to eat with my family). So when I found myself in the area again and in need of a place to work for a bit on a late Sunday morning, I took a chance that I would be productive there.

Once seated in a nice, big booth, I noticed that I was the only person there who looked like they were working and the only person at a table alone. The staff was very nice and very attentive (maybe even extra attentive because I was there with my computer rather than another diner?). I noticed the chatter of families, couples, and a large group that looked like they might be part of a church or social club. For a split second, I did wonder if any of them noticed me or what I was working on.

Then, I set up to my temporary office — including some my favorite mini versions of desk essentials — ordered breakfast and got to work. The hustle and bustle of the cafe dissolved into a blurry, nondescript background. I continued to work when my food arrived and after my meal with a bottomless cup of coffee and a few bites of (a very big) slice of chocolate pie.

The story I was working on that day is one I’ve been writing for a while. It is one of those stories that started out as one thing and has evolved into another (three other stories, actually). While part of me would love to complete it faster, I understand that it is unfolding in its own time and I’m really enjoying the process of writing it.

When I noticed my attention began to find its way back to the activity in the cafe and I felt that I had exhausted all I would be able to write for the moment, I asked for the check, packed up my office, and set out for the next task of the day.

Chances I’ll be back to work there again (when I’m in the area):
Pretty good. ☕ ☕ ☕ ☕
